Sound insulation testing

In Scotland sound insulation testing is not compulsory but often required by Building Control to demonstrate compliance with Section 5 of the Building ( Scotland) Regulations 2004. A typical Building Control requirement to check for workmanship or design defects would include conducting sound insulation testing on two examples of party wall and party floor construction.

In England and Wales, since the approval of the revised Part E of Building Regulations in July 2003, pre-completion sound insulation testing has become a statutory requirement on a minimum of 10% of party walls and floors within a development where Robust Details constructions have not been used.

Under the EcoHomes and Code for Sustainable Housing regulations, a higher level of sound insulation testing is generally required, up to 30% of the developments party floors and walls.
